The much-anticipated Long Grove Strawberry Festival has now come to a close, but not before the three days of incredible food, music, and fun for the whole family created delicious memories to last a lifetime.

This year, we welcomed the addition of a new exciting event to encourage a little friendly competition among Long Grove’s talented chefs. In the first ever Strawberry Fest’s Best of the Best tasting competition, local restaurants competed for the bragging rights to proudly say they accomplished the most creative, aesthetically pleasing, and flavorful strawberry dish anyone could put together.

The Long Grove Strawberry Festival Best of the Best tasting competition took place on Saturday, June 21. The esteemed judges, consisting of Angie Underwood, the Long Grove Village President, Mike Kostyo, the founder of the Chicago Food Blogger Network, and Anthony Martin executive chef at Tru restaurant in Chicago, offered their expertise and valued opinions to rank the contenders. Dishes were judged on a scale from 1-5 in the categories of Presentation, Creativity, and Overall Taste.

Competitors greeted judges one by one, and presented their dishes, explaining the range of flavors and methods of preparation involved. Each contestant proved their ability to think outside the box, and implement strawberries in their diverse types and styles of dishes.

Entries included everything stretching from sandwiches, soups, desserts, salads, and even raviolis and pierogies. The competition not only highlighted the creativity and quality of Long Grove restaurants and eateries, but also displayed the extent of cultural diversity in our town through its food.

The outright winner, as recognized by the judges, was The Village Tavern, who presented their Shaved Prime Rib Sandwich with Strawberry Salsa and Fontina Cheese.

In Second Place, we are proud to announce the Chilled Strawberry, Cucumber and Watercress Soup from High Tea with Gerri stood out as an exemplary usage of complementing flavors and ingredients, with creative execution and presentation.

And finally, in Third Place, Chatterbox Long Grove impressed judges with their Chocolate Strawberry Tacos, an interesting twist on an old favorite.

Other memorable dishes include the Shrimp and Strawberry Ceviche from the Long Grove Café, the Strawberry Apple Pie from the Long Grove Confectionery, the Strawberry Raviolis from Enzo & Lucia’s Restaurant, the Strawberry Macaroons filled with butter cream and fresh strawberries from Sweet Whimsy Pastry Shop, the Strawberry & Citrus Herb Goat Cheese Salad from The Olive Tap, and the Strawberry Pierogis from Beans & Leaves Coffee and Tea.

The Town of Long Grove is proud to recognize the outstanding culinary talent of all our contestants. We thank everyone who shared their creations with us and contributed to the light-hearted and fun-packed vibe of the Long Grove Strawberry Festival and the Best of the Best tasting competition.
